#1: Playful Creatures
Hello fellow earthlings, I have some doodles to share with you. This is a bit experimental because I’m not too sure how to narrate my drawings. In my experience, the craft of writing and drawing come from different wells of creative spirit for me with wildly different results, so please bear with the rudimentary exposition. You can skip down to the drawings, but in case you’re interested:
a) I’ve been romancing about fun larger-than-human-life costumes because of my upcoming Spring whale play. You’ll see that here.
b) I’m trying to figure out how to use a set of colors I like in a harmonious way that look nice to my eyeballs. As an aside, when I was 20, I failed my Color Theory class in junior college because I was struggling to go to my classes and missed what the date of the final was changed to. This was back when I was a depressed barista who wanted more than most things, to be an artist, who after failing a couple classes finally got the hint to take a break from college, fresh off the heels of reading Maggie Nelson’s Bluets at least three times. All that is to say, I’m not great with color. You’ll also see that here.
c) These particular drawings were all done digitally!
This was the first of this series, and perhaps the one I’m most proud of. I just love him.
I drew this little parade which I like okay but doesn’t feel quite right!!, and couldn’t decide which color palette I like better anyway. I drew a big nose because I personally hate my big nose and I’m trying to salve that wound a bit through art. Baby steps.

Strawberry gal was drawn initially alongside a blueberry helmed lady but they felt of two different worlds (perhaps because of the different temperature of colors?), in spite of both having fruit bearing heads. (you’ll see blueberry lady at the end of these)
Sun person is inspired by the paper mache mask that I made a couple winters ago (left), then used for my character Zoyra of the Morning Star.

I feel like these little star-catchers below are lacking dimension or life somehow? But I can’t put my finger on why. (Artists better than I, please gift me your wise input)
Annnnd a couple of the unfinished ones:
I quickly drew this one up for an ad in Rose’s Scorpio Mind newsletter to entice people to join the Milk of the Whale play 2.0. It’s my other favorite from the last week.
I missed Hourly Comics Day on February 1st (again!!) because I’m not on Instagram anymore, which for many things, came to rely on having other people tell me when things like this are happening. On this February 1st I spent most of my time on the computer in bed watching movies, so maybe it’s for the best.
Love,
Hannah June Althea
